Magna International has announced its intention to close its Grenville Castings unit in Perth by June 2019.

The closure of the plant, which is a subsidiary of Magna’s Cosma International Unit, will affect as many as 380 employees.

The Conlon Drive plant, which manufactured structural castings and aluminum components for automotive, heavy truck and recreational vehicles, was purchased by Magna for an undisclosed sum in August 2011.

Magna said in a June 28 statement that the Perth facility was no longer financially viable and as a result, the work performed there will be moved to other Magna manufacturing facilities.

A spokesman for the Aurora, Ont., firm said the decision to close Grenville Castings was not being made in relation to new U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel or aluminum. The company has been considering the the decision for months, the spokesman said.

Magna employs more than 168,000 employees in more than 29 countries worldwide.
