The City’s Planning Committee today approved an Official Plan amendment to update policies for City-owned lands to encourage development of a main street and greenspace in the Kanata Town Centre.

The City owns 11.6 hectares of vacant land in the Kanata Town Centre, south of Campeau Drive and east of Kanata Avenue. A concept plan for the area was developed in 1993, but the lands remain vacant. The amended policies encourage future development by revising minimum residential density targets to reflect buildings constructed to date. Changes would also allow for more open space and provide a functional design for the reconstruction of a portion of Kanata Avenue, potentially a central main street for Kanata.

The Committee also approved an application to designate Cobble Cottage, at 420 Kenwood Avenue, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, following a recommendation by the Built Heritage Sub-Committee.

The 1912 bungalow is a rare Ottawa example of a fieldstone house, and a local landmark that was one of the original residences within Westboro’s Highland Park development. The house is also associated with the development of the Highland Park Lawn Bowling Club.

Designation would provide additional oversight and protection for the property, giving Council authority to review and approve any future alterations to the exterior.

Items approved at today’s Planning Committee meeting will go to Council on Wednesday, November 28.
