The Environment and Climate Protection Committee today discussed the inventory of Ottawa’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2016.
Since 2012, the City decreased its corporate emissions by 25 per cent, while emissions across Ottawa decreased by 11 per cent. The decrease can be attributed to the closure of Ontario’s coal plants, lower consumption of electricity, efficiencies at the Trail Road Landfill and the City’s efforts to conserve energy at its facilities.
In 2019, staff will review the City’s reduction targets for greenhouse gas emission and the frequency of reporting on inventories, as part of the review of the Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan.
The Committee also received a report on the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee’s accomplishments and activities during this term of Council.
Items from today’s Environment and Climate Protection Committee meeting requiring City Council approval will go to Council on Wednesday, November 28.
