The City of Ottawa has implemented a door-to-door voluntary evacuation plan for 600 to 956 Bayview Drive in Constance Bay. The water on the road has made it unsafe and the road will close to vehicular traffic at 9 pm this evening for safety reasons.

Since water may also reach electrical meters near the households, electrical power to this area will also be shut down imminently. This may impact homes in that area that have not been flooded.

The City doesn’t have the power to initiate a mandatory evacuation. However, the City emphasizes that the risk to residents remaining in their homes is that flooded roads could physically cut them off from City support.

The City understands the stress surrounding the ordeal of being displaced and will provide a multi-service response team to provide assistance and comfort during the evacuation. Affected residents are encouraged to report to the Community Support Centre at the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre, at 262 Len Purcell Drive. They are also encouraged to register with the Canadian Red Cross.

Affected residents who require temporary lodging or additional support will then be directed to the Richcraft Recreation Complex – Kanata, at 4101 Innovation Drive. Transportation will be provided if needed.

Residents vacating their homes should follow these safety tips:

  • Remain calm.
  • Leave immediately.
  • Take your emergency preparedness kit with you.
  • Do not drive through flooded roadways.
  • Make emergency officials aware of any special needs.
  • Listen to the radio and follow social media for updated advice and instructions from local emergency officials.
  • Secure your home by closing and locking all windows and doors.
  • Contact or leave a note for family members indicating that you have left and where you have gone.
  • Call a designated out-of-town relative or friend so they can tell loved ones that you are safe.
  • Wear clothing appropriate for the weather.
  • Make arrangements for your pets.
  • Take one car per family to reduce congestion and delays.
  • Obey speed limits and the direction of officials, as some roads may be closed.
  • Only use routes specified by local authorities. Do not take shortcuts as they could lead to restricted, closed or dangerous routes.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.

The safety of residents is always our number one priority. We thank affected residents for their cooperation and understanding as we work quickly to respond to the situation.
