I think it's originally an American joke - and it usually goes "What did the Zen Buddhist say at the hot dog stand?" - Zen became popular in the USA in the 50s, so they use a lot of words like "Karma" and "Dharma" and "Koan". It might be that the idea of "one with everything" is from Zen (that's probably why the Japanese I told it to got it) and since the Dalai Lama, of course, practices Tibetan Buddhism, the joke doesn't really work for him.
