I had similar experience. I did not know that one of our project manager was a gay until company's annual party. I asked him where was your wife. He paused, then pointed to a man and said that was my partner. So embarrassing.
Although sometimes feel he dressed a little bit different from other people, never thought he was a gay.
It was said that people here can tell if a person is a gay from the way he dresses, walks or speaks and also from their body shape.
I guess we are a little bit numb and inknowledgeable in this case.

Some are obvious, some are not. Since I've known that one of my colleagues was a gay, he became obvious. 
Similar thing happened to me. At our xmas party a couple years back, I asked my colleague if his wife was coming, he laughed and pointed at his graduation ring and said: "I guess this fooled you huh". I still didn't get it, so I asked again: "Oh you are not married?" He totally BKed and yelled out: "I'm gay! How could you not know!"

Gays are usually friendly and fun, a little bit sarcastic, very liberal, and usually have exquisite taste. In short, they are great to be friends with.
