Source: Alberta Natural Gas

  • Alberta has large natural gas reserves in northeastern and central regions.
  • Companies extract gas from these fields for domestic use and export.

2️⃣ Transportation: Pipelines

  • Natural gas is transported hundreds of kilometers west via pipelines to the LNG plants in British Columbia (Kitimat).
  • Major pipelines include:
    • Coastal GasLink Pipeline – main route from northeastern BC / Alberta border to Kitimat
  • The pipeline ensures a steady, high-volume supply to the LNG liquefaction plant.

3️⃣ Liquefaction & Export: LNG Canada, Kitimat

  • At Kitimat, the natural gas is:
    1. Cooled to –162°C → turns into liquid (LNG)
    2. Stored in large tanks
    3. Loaded onto LNG carriers for shipment to Asia-Pacific markets (China, Japan, South Korea)

LNG Canada Phase 2 Overview

  • Objective: To double the facility's capacity from 14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 28 mtpa by adding two additional liquefaction units, known as "trains."
  • Ownership: The expansion will be managed by the same consortium of private investors that led Phase 1:
    • Shell – 40%
    • Petronas – 25%
    • PetroChina – 15%
    • Mitsubishi Corporation – 15%
    • KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation) – 5%

  • Timeline: If approved, construction could commence in the late 2020s, with potential commissioning in the early 2030s.
