The "user opnions" on www.cnet.com are very useful. I check them a lot. I never used the nc8000, most of laptop in our company is nc600 and nc6000. They are pretty solid and nc6000 has amazing battery life to.
Just my opnion: HP NC series and IBM thinkpad T series are "corporation notebooks" they are expensive but solid. Dell Inspiration and Compaq Presario are family notebooks, they are cheap, but you do get what you've paid for. (I've heard Dell Latitude was good, never get a chance to try one.)
