SHANGHAI - The mother of the accused in the Cecilia Zhang murder says she's anxious for a Canadian visitors' visa.
INDEPTH: Cecilia Zhang
Min Chen is accused of first-degree murder in the death of Cecilia Zhang
Wenying Hu is trying to come to Canada from Shanghai so she can support her son, 21-year-old Min Chen. She last saw him during a two-month visit to Canada last year.
Hu told the Toronto Star that he called her in the days before the arrest to tell her he was innocent and not to worry.
Chen, a Chinese national in Canada on a student visa, is charged with first-degree murder in nine-year-old Cecilia's death.
Hu accuses Toronto-area police of being unfair to her son and is afraid he will be unable to defend himself in court.
Police are still working on building a case but have not yet revealed a firm motive for the killing.
Cecilia was kidnapped from her home in October 2003. Her skeletal remains were found in Mississauga in March.
