That's too bad, I thought this was one of the best action thrillers in the history of moving making. Storyline is tightly nestled, particularly with each vivid yet believable character. My only regret is the director's choice of location for the ending sequence: a train chase. But the end is brilliant, almost like a parable, perfectly in sync with the beginning, just brilliant!
The smart conversations were used extensively to introduce and develop each character, the taxi driver Max who insisted that he's only doing a temp job, for the past 12 year, isn't that something? And Vincent, he's not a killer, that's only what he does, he doesn't think that he's a killer, same way that Max doesn't think that he's a taxi driver. Remember Vincent quoted John Lennon: "Life is what happens while you're making other plans."
Like the first movie Heat, I truly enjoyed yet another masterpiece of director Michael Mann.
This is a sophisticated movie, with smart dialogues and direction.
Michael Mann chose high definition video to shoot the movie, thus creating much more realistic LA street scenes, and urgency in actions. One of my favorite scenes is the Jazz club owner excitedly talking about the legendary Miles Davis, and bang, the immediate death! Just brilliant!
You probably prefer thrillers like The Bourne Identity.
Story is only used to support the characters. This movie is very much like an independent film. Cruise gave an excellent performance, I think, even better than his performance in the late Kubrick's Magnolia. His agility in actions (i.e. shooting the street punks) speaks louder than his words...ah my Tommy.
for those kind of action performance>>> john woo is better.
but I don't really like most of Hollywood movies. i perfer European,Russian and some Chinese movies.
