A strong earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale hit Southeast Asia on December 26, 2004. The earthquake triggered massive tsunamis (tidal waves) in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, southern India, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Burma, Mauritius, Somalia, Kenya, Seychelles and Tanzania. According to reports, the death toll stands at nearly 155,000, after Indonesia raises its tally to 94,000.
