I used to fall asleep listening to Yves Montand's songs, when I was little, and Nana Mouskouri, and Mireille Mathieu, and Edith Piaf, without knowing who they were, just enjoyed their voices. My dad was a big fan of Yves Montand, and later I took on the family tradition. :)

My personal favorites of Yves Montand are "Sous le Ciel de Paris" and "Les Feuilles Mortes", the lyrics are so beautifully written, and rhythm tender and melancholy. DoDo I know you like his version of La Vie en Rose, but I still prefer Piaf's interpretation. Somehow I always team her up with Maria Callas, I guess for the same intensity in their voice.

I was touched by your words, 渐渐. Smart like you, you would definitely know what I mean. Just hardly have I found anyone to share much in common.

My favorites of Yves Montand are also the two you mentioned. "Sous le Ciel de Paris" is one of those songs that get your attention instantly on first hearing; while "Les Feuilles Mortes" is the one that addicts you gradually and leaves you emotionally shaken no matter how often you hear it. I used to post the English version of "Les Feuilles Mortes", "autumn leaves" by Nat King Cole which is also a must-listen.

Edith Piaf is one of my all-time favorites. I'd like to post some of my collection of her songs once I find a big-enough uploading space. Mireille Mathieu always reminds me of Jin Yuxi due to their similar hairstyle. Don’t know much about Maria Callas except her love affair with Onassis and her name of being a great opera diva.

Enjoy your weekend!

Mireille Mathieu -- Et je t'aime

My favorite French song when I was in school.

DoDo, Thanks for the wonderful music. :)

I know exactly what you were talking about, you know about sharing interest. There is very little exposure to French music, but if you talk with people from other parts of the world, the Vietnamese, Tunisians, even people from Hong Kong, many are quite familiar with these songs.

Funny that you mentioned Cole, I love his voice. Somehow when I think of these old French songs, Cole's name always pops up. I fell in love with his interpretation of "Nature Boy" - "The greatest thing you'll ever learn Is just to love and be loved in return." It was a mesmerizing moment, I must have listened to the same song a douzan times at once, over and over, it's simply a classic!

Like Maria Callas, Piaf also has that intensity and passion in her voice. They are both strong-minded women (I think, from their voice), and unique in their own way. I have a 4-CD collection of Piaf, old songs, digitally enhanced, but I'd actually prefer the cracked noises from the old disc player. :)

Admit it, you are an old school romantic guy. ;)

Actually DoDo, one major difference between French songs and English songs is the lyrics. French lyrics are much more like a poem, many songwriters in Quebec are also being referred to as poets.

Quebec songs are beautiful, they are little known though. There are many talented songwriters from Quebec: Gilles Vigneault, Félix Leclerc, La Bolduc, Georges Dor and many more.

Here if one of my favorites: Black Eagle

L'Aigle Noir
Musique: Barbara, Catherine Lara

Quand soudain,
Il venait de nulle part,
Il surgit, l'aigle noir...

The black eagle
Translated by Babelfish

One fine day, or perhaps a night,
Close to a lake I had fallen asleep,
When suddenly, pretence to burst the sky,
And coming from nowhere,
Emerges a black eagle,

Slowly, spread wings,
Slowly, I live it to whirl,
Close to me, in a rustle of wings,
As fallen from the sky,
The bird was posed,

It had the eyes color ruby,
And of the feathers color of the night,
With its brilliant face of thousand fires,
The bird crowned king,
Carried a blue diamond,

Of its nozzle it touched my cheek,
Into my hand it slipped its neck,
At this point in time I recognized it,
Emerging from the past,
It had returned to to me,

Say the bird, ô say, takes along me,
Let us turn over to the country of formerly,
Like front, in my dreams of child,
To gather while trembling,
Stars, stars,

Like front, in my dreams of child,
Like front, on a white cloud,
Like front, to light the sun,
To be maker of rain,
And to make wonders,

The black eagle in a rustle of wings,
Took its flight to regain the sky,

Four feathers color of the night
A tear or perhaps a ruby
I was cold, it did not remain to me nothing
The bird had left me
Only with my sorrow

One fine day, or perhaps a night,
Close to a lake, I had fallen asleep,
When suddenly, pretence to burst the sky,
And coming from nowhere,
Emerges a black eagle,

One fine day, one night,
Close to a lake, deadened,
When suddenly,
It came from nowhere,
It emerges, the black eagle...

Thanks! Yes, I was...

The reason why I posted "Les Champs-Elysees" because this song and Yves Montand's "Sous le Ciel de Paris" once made up the Paris in my imagination when I was in school.

The Accordion which is very frequently used in French songs always brings to me a vivid sketch of "Le Quartier Latin".

Way to go, DoDo. Thanks for your picturisque music by Yves Montand.

渐渐, you mentioned an interesting phenomenon that I've also found for quite some time. Haven't figured out why many of our fellow people are not yet ready to take what the whole world cherishes as music treasure.

Funny that you mentioned Cole, I love his voice... "Nature Boy" - it's simply a classic![/B]
Once I was driving with Cole's CD on. A native guy sitting beside me was a bit struck by my choice of music. Not that he didn't like Cole but he thought I was one of those who would go for Christine Aguilera type. I told him that I was insulted. :) "Nature boy" surely is one classic piece of Cole's. "Mona Lisa", "Unforgettable", "When I fall in love" are mostly known as Cole's masterpieces. Besides, "It's only a paper moon", "Too young", "Walkin' my baby home", "L-O-V-E", "A blossom fell", "Quizas, quizas, quizas", "Stardust", etc., are all my love. Oops, I'd better stop here and start a new post of Nat King Cole.

I was a big Agatha Christie fan when I was in grade 4 or 5. Oh God knows how I was obsessed by the classic suspense she presented at that time. You must be curious why I mentioned her in this post? Coz the next song I'm going to introduce was performed by Jane Birkin, who played roles in "Death On The Nile" as well as in "Evil Under The Sun". Ok, here is a picture of hers. Guys, time to challenge your memory.

I really hope I could be as talented as 渐渐 and xiaomage in picking up French. Ok, I have a dream that one day...... :)

Thanks, AnneJJ. I just love this kind of greetings! Enjoy your vacation!

OMG, you picked all my favorite songs! I own a double-disc of Nat King Cole, and those are my all time favorites! So rare to find someone with similar interest.

I love Agatha, I've pretty much read all her books, and her skillful narration really did give me shivers when I read it, even on a sunny day.

You've just made my day. :)

p.s. I would also be offended if someone tells me that I'm Christina Aguilera type. :D Magic100 is permanently banned from my car radio.

who knows the song played at the end of 都乐环球影视? @ 北京电视台2000年左右的节目. I heard it a few times, am so eager to find a copy now, but i have no clue lyrics wise, i know literally none French (got instantly turned off by the Quebec accent, so I didn't want to learn it here in Canada). but once i hear it again, I will recognize it, a female artist, soft melody. Who knows what I am talking about? :)

渐渐, glad to know that we share more in common. I've been always interested in crime and mystery literature since I was a kid. Up to my adulthood, those memories fill my mind, although no concrete any more. Among those detective novels I've read, Agatha's 罗杰疑案(don't know the English name) seems to have left me with the deepest impression in terms of the most brilliant suspense she had provided. The tightknit plot was already vague in my mind, but the deceptions still haunted there, never fading away. Another mystery novel I'd like to mention is Rebecca by another British author, once made into a movie with great Hitchcock as its director. Oh, what a wonderful novel! The surprising mystery permeated through the whole storyline. You got absorbed in it once you opened the book.

For our similar interest, 渐渐, cheers!

To 兰婷, thanks for your interest in these songs. ( The links are not working at this moment. Try tomorrow morning.)
