The Queensway has been reopened in both directions between Woodroffe and Pinecrest as a police operation in the area has wrapped up.

Callers to the CFRA newsroom tell us that there are still major slowdowns in the areas surrounding the operation as well.

A suspect had been pulled over to the side of the highway and the Bomb Squad was called in. The bomb squad detonated a package in the vehicle, however we are not being told what that package was.

The robot that helped detonate that package then searched the rest of the vehicle. After a while a police dog was brought in. It left the vehicle happy, signaling the end of the operation.

Both Ottawa and Ontario Provincial Police are involved in the investigation.

Little is being said about the suspect or whether a threat was received.

OTTAWA ? The Ontario Provincial Police re-opened Highway 417 just before 12:30 p.m., after shutting it down for more than three hours Monday, causing major traffic delays on and around the expressway.

This Transportation Ministry camera, pointed west from Woodroffe, shows an Ottawa Police vehicle across the eastbound lanes at 11:01 a.m.

The 417 was closed both ways at 9:15 a.m., between Pinecrest and Woodroffe, according to an OPP news release issued at the same time. The release said the closure was "to assist the Ottawa Police with an investigation."

While closed, traffic was re-routed at the Pinecrest and Woodroffe exits, causing significant congestion on surrounding roadways. Baseline and Iris were reported to be very busy due to cars coming off the Queensway in that area.

A Ministry of Transportation camera at Woodroffe clearly showed an Ottawa Police vehicle parked across the eastbound lanes of the highway.

Further west, on the highway's south side between Highway 416 and Richmond Road, a traffic camera showed cars exiting the highway using an on-ramp. Police eventually stopped drivers from doing so.

Ottawa police have yet to provide details about why the highway was closed.

One eyewitness says the bomb squad pulled over a black Chrysler Neon on the eastbound lanes. Police sent in a robot, which went through the car, pulling out anything it could find. Police exploded at least one package, which appeared to be a plastic Subway sandwich bag.
