I do not think the machines distinguishes the origins of the can. They just take cans from anywhere.

Yes, the machine is designed to recognize the difference because there is an unique bar coding on the cans sold in Quebec. Cans bought from Ontario will either be refused by the machine or accepted without credit.

all the info is on the bar code. Not only it tells you where the bottle/can was sold, but also the brand (coke or pepsi) as well.
