(1) You can use sand if you stuck in the snow. But cat-litter is by far better for this purpose. Because it curds when touch snow while sands dont. But for most CFC here, I will suggest call a tow truck if you get stuck in the snow bank. Do it yourself will often aggrevate the mess you are already in.
(2) Some ppl also think, it adds weight to the back of the car so it will not skid or spin as easy. This is entirely BS. The amount of weight will not help much. The important thing is to get more traction in the front in the first place. For that get a set of snow tires and that is your best bet. Sand in the trunk will NOT help you (unless you have a few really big bags
)

if you fall into a ice-hole or something, sand won't help at all.
I will put a 2 bricks in the car ( where to find I dont know ), idea is to let the front tires to back on the road. Thats help me a lot in the last couple of winters.
Hard paper is the same idea, but it breaks so easily.
