If it is 超级脏, you may think to do it yourselves. The contract usually does the cleaning quickly. It just cleans an area with cleaner solution once, never does it twice or tribly. Otherwise the price will be much higher.

If you are capable of doing labor work, you can rent a machine at PriceChopper or A&P at cost of ~$50/day.

In the passed few years, I hired a professional to clean my carpet every year. Paid $300-$400 for the whole house each time. This year I bought a carpet deep cleaner (http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-F5914-...0350/ref=pd_bbs_5/102-5083946-1947306?ie=UTF8) on Amazon at US$124.95 when it was on sale. I asked my friend shipped it to me from post office at cost of US43. This machine works perfectly and I can do it whenever I like to. One day is enough for cleaning 4 bedroom and stairs. I spent half of the cost for profesional but got an excellent machine for frequent cleaning.

If you are a person who really likes clean and tidy, you may consider this way to save a lot money.

I did a lot of research on Internet before making the decision to buy Hoover. I saw Sears sell my model at CA$349.99 plus tax. See the review at http://www.epinions.com/pr-Hoover_SteamVac_F5914-900_Vacuum.

You may found more reviews on Bissell, Vapor, Dirt Devil sold by WalMart, Sears, FutureShop on epinions. It is easy to get conclusion which one is better.

Hoover is a brand of Maytag - a high-end appliance maker. I have a story to share with you guys. After the first time I used the cleaner, I found a crack on a non-critical part. Since it is in warrenty, I sent it to a local store for service. But the people in that store are not honest. When they returned the cleaner to me, it was very dirty and had been heavily used (They might like this cleaner also). I was angery and wrote a complaint email with photos to the district manager of Hoover in Montreal. I was supprised that at 12:00 pm the 2nd day, Fedex delivered a brand new one to my home, and left me a prepaid way bill for shipping the old one back to Hoover. The problem was solved in less than 24 hours!

Try to use warm wet towel with some soap to clean a small area. After it dry, if it makes some different, you can try DIY or hire someone to clean the carpet. If it does not make any difference, the carpet is worn, clean it wouldn’t make it any better. It is time for new carpet.

Agility gets 2.5 stars only, not so good as we expected.

Hoover F5914-900 (Canadian Model F5914-950) is not the most expensive model in the Hoover product line. However it got 4.5 stars, I'm satisfied with its work after I used it.

For a new and light dirt, towel and soap may work. But it not a good idea for large area and old stain. The carpet may get problem in the future (mildew) if water goes the carpet base and padding underneath. When deep cleaner does it, it releases clearning solution, brushes the carpet surface by SpinScrub, then vacume the dirty water quickly. The water never goes to the bottom. That's why the carpet not only is cleaned, but also drys quickly.
