Remembering the BEAT generation

HOWL
by Allen Ginsberg

I saw the the best minds of my generation
destroyed by madness, starving hysterical
naked,
dragging themselves through the negro
streets at dawn looking for an angry fix

Hey, I didn't say "牛克思主义 = a gamble too far". I think there is a misunderstanding here.

It is the Hedge fund call Amaranth =a gamble too far

I have never equate 牛克思主义 with Amaranth or Hedge fund. I just happen to find the news on the Internet

In fact, I think similar ideas as 牛克思主义 are prossibly the solutions to the world's problems and madnesses.

btw, I am flattered by your compliment, but somehow I am not convined, but thanks though.:)

Sometimes Jesus walks on the street, we fail to recognize him. Western cutlures/civilizations are so deeply influenced by Greek/Roman mythologies and history and the Bible, words sometimes fail us. Like amaranth, it is meaningless to us until we find out it has a beautiful meaning.

One day at a cafeteria I had a small talk with a seemingly smart mom of twin girls, who introduced her two daughters to me as Minerva and Athena. I was amazed at her audacity at naming her two girls. Then I wrote down my Chinese name (慧生). and explained what it meant in Chinese. We both laughed.

I told her as I am a Manchurian, my mom named me after another Manchurian girl (慧生), who, 49 years ago, was killed with a bullet in her head at the age of 19.

Agree.

English is a hybrid/mixture. It borrowed/derived words from various sources and countries, Latin, German, French, Greek, Roman.....absolutely a crazy language. And because of that it has so many synonym, for example: globe, ball, orb, sphere, circle, circumference, ring, round, disk........similar concepts, but nothing similar in writing.

English is the most crazy language in the world?!

Myth, legend and poetry
Amaranth, or Amarant (from the Greek amarantos, unwithering), a name chiefly used in poetry, and applied to Amaranth and other plants which, from not soon fading, typified immortality.

Aesop's Fables (6th century BC) compares the Rose to the Amaranth to illustrate the difference in fleeting and everlasting beauty.

A Rose and an Amaranth blossomed side by side in a garden,
and the Amaranth said to her neighbour,
"How I envy you your beauty and your sweet scent!
No wonder you are such a universal favourite."
But the Rose replied with a shade of sadness in her voice,
"Ah, my dear friend, I bloom but for a time:
my petals soon wither and fall, and then I die.
But your flowers never fade, even if they are cut;
for they are everlasting."
Thus, in John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667), iii. 353:

"Immortal amarant, a flower which once
In paradise, fast by the tree of life,
Began to bloom; but soon for man's offence
To heaven removed, where first it grew, there grows,
And flowers aloft, shading the fount of life,
And where the river of bliss through midst of heaven
Rolls o'er elysian flowers her amber stream:
With these that never fade the spirits elect
Bind their resplendent locks."
Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in Work without Hope (1825), also references the herb, likely referencing Milton's earlier work. (ll 7-10 excerpted):

Yet well I ken the banks where Amaranths blow,
Have traced the fount whence streams of nectar flow.
Bloom, O ye Amaranths! bloom for whom ye may,
For me ye bloom not! Glide, rich streams, away!
The original spelling is amarant; the more common spelling amaranth seems to have come from a folk etymology assuming that the final syllable derives from the Greek word anthos ("flower"), common in botanical names.

In ancient Greece the amaranth (also called chrusanthemon and elichrusos) was sacred to Ephesian Artemis. It was supposed to have special healing properties, and as a symbol of immortality was used to decorate images of the gods and tombs. In legend, Amarynthus (a form of Amarantus) was a hunter of Artemis and king of Euboea; in a village of Amarynthus, of which he was the eponymous hero, there was a famous temple of Artemis Amarynthia or Amarysia (Strabo x. 448; Pausan. i. 31, p. 5).

If one looks back at history, one would be amazed at the language he or she is learning (do not forget there are millions of people in China are doing this). English was first spoken by the so-called most backward folks of the time. They were uneducated and uncultured. English was then improved due to the invasion by the Germanic tribes (most likely I am wrong, however, I still believe England was first conquered by the Germans then by the Romans). Then it was the French influence. So the peasants raised sheep (English), but when it becomes food on the table for the noblemen, it becomes mutton (French). That might be one reason that the French still look down on English/American folks.

The French are arrogant folks. they practically look down on everybody else. I can't stand the French

they probably forgot it was the English/American who liberated them from the Nazi. hahaa...they should feel ashamed instead

First Daughter robbed

First Daughter Barbara Bush had her purse and cell phone stolen in a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, though she was being guarded by Secret Service agents while a Secret Service agent got into a fight with someone after a night out and was badly beaten, according to the law enforcement reports. The purse snatching took place on Barbara's first night in town while she was dining in the picturesque San Telmo neighborhood. The Secret Service agents failed to notice the incident.

What a story. I had no idea.

I believe it is ?方面的情?, not 殉情. because if they really love each other, they could just run away. It was 1957,the world was big enough and open-minded enough. so, I think ?新迂吝慧生 had met a mad man.

Winds Of Change
Scorpions

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change
An August summer night
Soldiers passing by
Listening to the wind of change

The world is closing in
Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
The future's in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever
I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

The wind of change
Blows straight into the face of time
Like a stormwind that will ring the freedom bell
For peace of mind
Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to say

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change
