sounds like " Zu Zhi Yi Zhi". Nothing scary. It's to prevent the tooth loss. Based on the term you provided, literally, it probably is a process to "pad" your gum line with something (tissue of your own or something else, such as a creature with very long snout). You may picture the process as building levee or dyke to prevent people or trees falling into the water. If you are not that elderly, this process may not be that necessary. It might be necessary for the dentist to make money though. Just remember to floss your teeth often and do it properly. Change a softer tooth brush and use mouth wash daily. My gum line somewhat receded too even though I am not like an old elephant. It's due to the poor oral hygeine habit I had before and wrong way of tooth flossing and brushing. Nothing to be really concerned.

Thanks for your comments. I am wonering if it is really necessary for me to do the surgery. My concern is that the dentist may just want to make money out of it.

If you have exhausted other alternatives such as replacing the tooth brush with a much softer one, or using the electronic tooth brush(such as Oral B) which can massage the gum, brushing and flossing teeth properly(not too aggressively), and after about six month of practicing such approaches still noticed the gum line recession was being progressive(more than 2mm) and continued sufferring from the cold/hot/acidic/sweet food or drinks, then it might be necessary to reply on the tissue graft to protect your tooth root and eliminate the discomfort.
We(mainlanders) may all have some sort of "gum line recession" because our teeth are smaller and our gum is somewhat softer(??I am not sure). It might not be a disease or problem for us. So, see how you feel and make your own decision.
