how often should you ask the professional to do furnace maintenance service? Is it hard? Can I do it by myself?

My house's furnace clean every year, there has two times the furnace stop in the middle of night (winter) and because we have service, so the gentleman came to fix it within one hour even in mid-night. One of my friend he never pay for anyone to clean his furnace, one night his furnace didn't work then he need to pay a lot and wait to anther day for someone come to see what happened.

How much does it cost? Can you give the information of service man if possible?
