On the day with big snow melting, water was found on the carpet close to the side wall in the basement. The besement is fully developed with dry wall and carpeting. It looks like the water penetrated through the wall with cracks which can not be seen due to the dry wall corverage.

Any solutions to solve this problem are very much appreciated. Any good companies to do this work?

Thanks a lot, and Happy New Year!

Leaking is not a rare thing in houses(especially in old houses). I do not
think it is a good time to fix it now. A few simple things you can do now.
1. clear all snow near where water leaks.
2. make a slope there to let water flow away that place(not stay or sink).
3. dig it around that area and seal the cracks with asphalt and cement
from outside(you need to know how to dry it). Pay attention to gas
pipe when you dig.

If all these do not work, get a professional guy to fix it.

Thanks and two more questions

Thanks, Newer.

The leaking wall is between my and neighbour's houses. There is no visible cracks above the ground on the wall. It might be not a good time for digging up.

Two more questions:
1. For now, making water running a slope is feasible. Where to buy or get the small gravel for the slope?

2. For the furture, I may have to ask a prefessional to do this. Do you know any good prefessionals for this kind of work?

Thanks again,

I think Newer's suggestions good. The crack(s) may be under the surface which you almost could do nothing in winter. You need to wait until the late spring when the snow and land are totally melt. I dealt this kind of problems twice in the Toronto area. It costs about $350 to fixing each crack in the Toronto area (a Chinese company), but it may be for $600 and up for each crack in Ottawa. It is very hard to DIY (one needs to dig down to the part below the outside concrete foundation). For a professional work, you could look at a yellow book for building repairs/building materials, concrete repairs, foundation contractors, and crack repairs. Good luck!

Theoretically you need city permission to dig around the wall, because gas pipes could be cut.

I do not know either. Ask the guys who build houses by themselves.

I do not know anyone who does this. Check this out in the phone book.

Good luck.
