I am a high tech engineer who has worked in CA, USA for 2 years full time. I paid EI on every pay stub. I got laid off recently. My H1B visa status is void once I got laid off in USA. How and where can I apply for EI? In USA or Canada? Anyone who has any experience or knowledge about this? Many thanks in advance!:(

You should go to Canadia EI place to ask.

I had different experice about this. When I left job in Canada and lived in USA, I applied canadian EI in USA.

EI is unemployment insurance

Where you paid the EI, then where you should apply for the benefit. Apparently in US.

Your USA EI has nothing to do with Canada, you cannot get benefit from Canada for sure.
As my knowledge, you cannot get benefit from US either, as your lost status, you must leave the country within 10 days. This was a known unfair problem. I remember a Michigan Senator raised this issue at Capital Hill 8 years ago. I am not sure any progress since then, maybe rules are changed by new bills, I am not sure on this, just FYI.

I got my US EI in 2007 but I worked on an TD visa

You'd better to call your state regarding UI. Some states allow Canadians to receive UI while they are in Canada. UI policy varies from state to state.
