有谁种过cedar hedge (in Barrhaven)? 想取取经

Thanks a lot!

你想知道cedar品種還是種植方法? 想種的地方朝向往哪兒? Fence邊上,還是沒fence當backdrop? 理想高度想多高? 我是landscape architect。

I'm planning to plant some hedges too. I have chain link at the backyard, and I want to plant the hedges against the fence to give privacy. I was thinking emerald(Thuja Occidentalis Emerald). How can you tell me about this type of hedge and do you have any good advice on growing hedges (or what type do you suggest). Do they attract mosquitoes? The max. height I want from the hedges is 12 -16 feet.

Emerald Cedar is originated from Sweden, it's more a narrow and pyramidal species. They're about 4m in height and spreading around 1m in maturity. You may also have to plant them a little closer to each other as you would with White Cedar. White cedar is a native species, a fast grower if you want to achieve the look of a hedge a little sooner.

Cedars are not salt tolerant, so be sure not to plant them along roadway. They prefer sunny or partial shady area and will not grow uniformly or properly in heavy shade. I normally spec them about 40 to 50 cm apart in a slight zigzag pattern. Backfill with existing soil that has been mixed with triple mix or manure. Compact the soil a bit around the plant and I would put mulch on top to help retain moisture. I recommend using transplanting fertilizer and water them thoroughly. Keep cedars watered during dry weather, they need the moisture to establish a healthy system.

When you need to trim cedars, prune them lightly, just a few inches of growth to stimulate those areas to grow fuller. Remember to keep them slightly narrower on top to allow even light conditions in all branches, this shape helps to reduce snow build-up in winter, as well as maintaining its fullness around the base of the hedge. Pruning is very important, you can find a lot of ugly mature cedars in older home have the shape of a top heavy with a bare bottom, those are due to incorrect pruning and you don't want that in your house.

Hope this help. :)

Thanks Tina, I really appreciate your detailed info. Actually I already bought the cedars called brandon cedars. We planted them about 2 1/2 feet apart, against the chain link fence. In terms of maintenance, it is the same way as you would do with emerald or other cedars?

Brandon Cedars are nice too, they're considered as native (or introduced native) to North America. They have a columnar slow-growing habit. You don't have to prune them as much, but be sure to keep mulch on the top soil to help retain water. :)

Anyone knows where to buy cedar trees? I have not found any farm that sell good cedar trees (4-5 feet)
Thanks
