about the picture required for my VISA

I am going back China ASAP due to an emergency in my family. I noticed that China Embassy required a recent picture for VISA application. I have one taken a while ago. Does anyone have any idea what the 'recent' exactly means?Do they check the date of the picture?Thanks a lot!
