Very encouraging paper. Thanks so much for the original author's hard working of typing out all his several years of personal experience to share with the overall Chinese community especially among the new immigrants.
This story teaches us that nothing is impossible by working hard to improve ourselves in this new land, and that practical skills are much more important than PhDs, Masters etc, and that adapting ourselves to the ever changing job market needs is key to a successful process of establishing a new life in a new land.
I would not believe that all the PhD scientists switching to another career is what the author suggested through this article. The real smart PhD scientists should be able to re-define themselves in this new land, and they have to be even smarter in finding the relevance they have mastered in theory to the job market reality, and in landing themselves a position in which to exercise their wisdom/knowledge/expertise.
But it is not easy to be a PH.D, why not go on your research?
You may not get paid as much as a programmer, but your life
is more challenging and stable. And you can really make some
contribution to the area. You could be wellknown, it is another
kind of success.
I appreciate his courage for changing to adapt the new environment, but it's pity that he gave up his career to be a programmer. I'm not sure does he ask himself, 'Do I have achievement feeling?', 'Do I get what I love to do?'...

the writting is genuine, the author sincere. i don't see any bragging or blowing his own horn. it seems that the author does have something to say, and wants to tell it all.
