The judgement day is coming. Here are some facts I heard on the radio recently.
Ottawa is cutting (by retiring etc, not by laying off) 10,000 government workers and will also freeze many budgets. 10,000 is employee number, another 50K to 60K (private sector and non-profit, charity, programs) will be affected by the budgets freeze.
Federal government is decentralizing many of its service to many other cities. There are two departments set up in Hamilton and Calgary instead of as planned in Ottawa recently.
As a fact, over 70% of Ottawa economy is based on spending tax dollars, we sell very little to other cities and internationally. 1990 to 2000, Ottawa economy is much diversified. Like the director of Chamber of Commerce said, 'Ottawa should sell internationally'. But we produce abundantly in this city is bureaucrats.
Ottawa is going to see very low economy growth in the next 10 years, lower than the inflation rate probably.
There is over 70% increase of government services set up in Ottawa in the last 10 years.
City of Ottawa is very broken financially, Ottawans going to see all kinds of weird taxes and fee increases. Federal is very broken too, but not as bad as City of Ottawa.
With the department cutting down people, there is one department that is hiring, you got it. CRA, especially the auditing department. There are four business categories that will be intensively audited this year. Restaurant, Health, Convenience Stores, Construction (Rennovation). If you are in one of them, watch out. The personal tax is going to be audited heavily this year too. They are calling it the hidden revenue (lost tax plus hefty fines), there are areas they are very interested, oversea investment, renting, international shopping etc.
Ottawa always has delayed impact on economy slow down. The economy crisis has actually just started to impact Ottawa, the next 3 to 5 years are going to be very hard.
So if you just bought the expensive house and got an affordable low mortage, the situation could change from good to bad very quickly.
Like what happened in 80s, downsizing the government lowered the house price in Ottawa. What could happen is that the current house price increase eats of the next decade room for growth. We might see a decrease first, then very slow recovery.

If you want to move to States, this year could not be better. Sell the house, get a decent amount, then change them to US dollars with very good rate.

Spending restraints will take toll on region over next three years, Conference Board says

The report notes the federal government has grown rapidly after emerging from a prolonged period of cuts in the last decade where employment reached a low of 78,000 in 1998.
"The federal government not only erased the deficit, it also started running large surpluses. In turn, the government began rebuilding the public service. "By 2009, federal government employment in Ottawa-Gatineau stood at 139,000 -- 77 per cent higher than in 1998."
Arcand said, "If anything, the capital economy today is less diversified than it was because of the rapid government growth."
The report forecasts that government jobs at all levels in the capital region will fall from a high of 157,600 in 2009 to a low of 148,000 in 2012 before starting to grow again. The numbers are based on Statistics Canada labour force survey results.
check the data before 1998 first, comparing with 1998 it ups 70%. do you know what happened from 1990-1997?
