I went Wal-Mart in Southkey yesterday, I was driving in the parking lot, another car backward and his rear bump hit my car. Then I called my car insurance, they arranged to send me one rental car and took my car to garage.

Although it is not major damage to my car, there are some obvious scratches in the side of car. My car is Toyota corolla, his car is Saturn with no any damage.

My damage might be less than $1000. I am afraid of being using insurance rental car and result of more money spending, which could cause my insurance increased next year?

Another drive is black man, he did not admit the scratches caused by his car. Because i could not find the Ottawa police number, i did not call.

Any comments and any suggestions, I might use it for next time.

Thank you for the information.

I went to the police station today, unfortunately, I was told that either I went there with the damaged car ( I was driving rental car) or both drivers there, they can file the report.

it is no luck again and got another parking ticket. I did not know there is time limited for the parking meters.

it seems there car insurance might be increased although it is not my fault. Nothing I can say now.

you should call police first. or both went^to police station, otherwise hard to identified whose mistake. Check your policy, to see how much deductable for your colision.

If there is collision

It is quite common that cell phone doesn't have camera feature. If you have your cell phone (or digital camera) with you, the first thing you have to do is use your camera/cell phone to capture pictures of the collision, like picture of other car, and your car, and the surroundings. Those are your proofs in future. Also you have to stop the other car driver, asking for his driver license, his insurance number, with the above information, this proves that there was accident. Also, it depends on city by law (I mean City of Ottawa) that only if there is injury or damage is more than 1000 (I think) then you HAVE to call the police, else, they won't come. Even though it is not your fault, your insurance still may go up since you have lost your "NO CLAIM BONUS".
Good luck

Thank you for all valuable suggestions, all of you are very kind.

My damage is being estimated for $1300. they would like to replace a rear bump.Once the car dameged throught the car insurance, the expense would be higher than we expected.

I would like to complain the City Ottawa . The parking meters indicates the time from 8:30 to 3:30, the sign in the post indicates no stop between 3:30 to 5:30. I rushed in the street at 4:00, whe I put the money into the meter, I did not noticed the time limited. When I got out of office at 4:17, I got the fine ticket for $80 due to parking in the non_stoping area. I saw the sign of non-stop in the post at the moment. I never though I could get ticket even my money in the parking meter. City of Ottawa make parking so complicated, both Parking meter and ticket make money but never conside the people's feeling and convenience.

i heard of that parking lot collision would be consided as %50 and %50 fault each other for all moving cars and never consides what causes the coliision. it is not really fair for my situation.

In parking lot and anywhere without specific direct indicate,
responsibility is half half, no matter whose fault it is. So people should drive extra carefully in these kinda placeS. Learn this from my lawyer professor.

Second, half and half cost you less than $700 no matter how. Nothing really to complain actually, but you ve already report to insurance company. So long run, it s not worth at all caz ur insurance WILL go up for sure. If you didn't report nor ask them to cover the damage, they won't increase next year just based on this accedent. Know this from friend who had the similar situation but didn't report.

Parking ticket...... I have to say I feel sorry for you. You have to read the sign when you park a car no matter where, especially in busy streets like downtown or near government buildings. You pay full responsibility to what happens if there is a sign but you didn't understand that. City definately won't bother to care your complain, even though you are a tax payer who paid for the sign and the paycheck of whoever gave you the ticket. So my tip for you is looking for the sign and understand that. If you were not sure, just simply not park there.

Just learn more of these at least to protect yourself In The future. Good luck.

A lot of people may not understand the parking lot rule correctly, especially those who are at fault will direct you to wrong understanding.

I had experienced a small collision in a parking lot. I was driving forward to enter a parking space while another car was started and backing out of from right beside. I beeped her four times and the driver still backed into my front bumper. Then she told me it should be 50% 50% at fault. She suggested me to fix own car or vis versa. I didn't agree because I had no mistake. Although I called police but the police lady asked me to go to the police station to report the accident.

I went to the police station and the police man determined it should be the one who was driving backwards to have 100% fault. I told the driver what the police man said and she finally paid for the cost of repairing my car.

So don't be hesitate to go to report the accident if you have the info of another driver. If you can convince the police that you were not at fault, you shouldn't pay for repairing your car.

Hope it helps.
