OTTAWA-A severe lightning storm that passed through the Ottawa region late Wednesday is being blamed for several fires in the area, including one that forced a family from its home.
Ottawa firefighters raced to a Barrhaven home at 575 Paul Metivier Dr., off Woodroffe Avenue, after lightning struck the roof shortly after 8 p.m.
While the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, it still caused extensive structural damage to the two-storey, single-family home, leaving it uninhabitable for the time being.
The homeowner, Ajith Panagoda, was not at home at the time of the lightning strike, but his wife and two children were.
Panagoda said his family heard a loud noise on the roof, but until neighbours rushed over to warn them they didn’t know the roof was on fire.
“It is awful for this to happen. I was so proud to buy a brand new house,” he said, explaining how he and his family moved to Ottawa from Montreal a year ago, looking for a better place to raise their children.
Fire officials estimate the the fire caused about $200,000 in damages to the building and another $100,000 in damages to the contents of the house.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, lightning was likely to blame, officials said, noting that a “aggressive” lightning storm was passing through the region at the time.
Indeed, fire department officials said they received multiple calls of lightning strikes setting off alarms and causing power outages in various parts of the city. Witnesses said that lightning hit a hydro pole causing a transformer fire on Ogilvie Road near Cosmic Adventures, causing a power outage.
Another strike involved the Jardins Belle Rive Retirement Center in Rockland where an electrical panel was set on fire after being hit by lightning shortly before 10 p.m.
