Thanks again.

I did called the garage you recommended and they want me bring my car to there for further discusion. I'm going to drop by later.

You're right. Canadian Tire told me nothing except wanted me to do repairng test which will cost $165.

For the codition pass, I called Ontario ministry of Transport and was told that I have to go to the authorized facility other than else garages. the cost maximal is $450.

I carefully read the info provided by ccc. it's really usefully for me. At least I got an idea how the exhaust system works. I'm just wondering if I need change both CATALYTIC Converte as well as sensor because Engine Check is on which is related to the emisson control.

Yes. My car is Nisan Maxima which manufactured by Japan. Nisan's parts too expensive.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maxima is a VERY nice car. It is same class as Camry V6 or Accord V6.

Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, Susuki, they are all Japanese cars, and are RELIABLE.
If you buy parts from dealer, which are BETTER quantity and also more expensive. You can buy something called AFTER Market, which is like generic drug. And because of the fact that Honda and Toyota are the mostly sold Japanese cars, manufaturers will produce after market parts for these two Japanese companies than other Japanese brand names, (if you are driving cars like Accura, Lexus, .. the expenisve verions of both company, then, don't go for after market), and those parts are usually much cheaper (may be 30 % of that of original).
The cost of repairment has two parts, cost of parts and labour.
If you go to dealer, cost of labour (in this case, change of Converter) is usually 95 CAD an hour plus tax, and the job is 2 to three hours (there is a STANDARD book outlying how many hours of labour for a particular job), hence if you go to dealer to change your converter, just the labour is over 400 CAD. Don't expect Canadian Tire will charge you less!. And the part is more expensive (and of course better quality), you should expect the cost exceeds 700 or even 800, and because of the qulality of original, you can have the car for another 11 years before you need another repairment.
Since you want to use your car for another two years (pass once), cost of after market is around 150 and actual hours of labour is 1.5 hours, and garage usually charges 45 to 50 an hour (CASH, tax included), hence my estimation is around 250. With a little bit of luck, you can pass next time, you can drive car for FOUR years, and at that time, your car is 15 years old, maybe time to buy a new one.
Those who work in Canadian are EMPLOYEEs of Canadian Tire. Canadian Tire as a company must make money, hence will charge according to that STANDARD book. And Canadian Tire pays their own mechanic around 35 an hour, but if you include all the EI, rent, health benefit, pension, etc, the cost to Canadian Tire is at least 65 an hour, and that is the reason why cost of labour there is over 80 an hour. If you go to garage, the mechanics are usually SELF-Employed, and licensed. If you know the mechanic is HONEST, you save most on Labour fee.

By the way, good luck, and enjoy driving your MAXIMA.

Okay. I'll bring my car to a garage. Hopefully $250 can make the problem gone. and thanks for your suggestion.

顺便问一下,除了CanadianTire,哪里还有能做Emission Test的?有没有值得推荐的? 先谢了。

My mechanic told me, try not go to a test center with garage next to it.
He told me, he has a client who went to an American car dealer for maintenance, and told the customer manager his car needs emission test, the manager told his client his car needs over 400 dollars repairment before passing the test, he left and went to ask my mechanic for second opinion, and my mechanic told him his car doesn't need any repairment, which was true, and his car passed the test.

my friend did the first E-test near baseline and 417 and it failed.

At the same day without did anything, he went to a garage very close to his office (bells corner), and it passed. So, it really depend on the garage.

If amyone need more information, please feel free to qqh me.

BTW, I am not working on either of those garage at all.

I dropped by the garage at 916 Gladstone. The guy told me he doesn't do emission test and recommend me to another garage. I visited the recommended one. but they wanted to charge me $450. so I didn't make any progress

You are right, that garage does not do emission test.
You can ask him what is the problem of emission failure. Can that be fixed by changing CATALYTIC Converter. And how much it cost to change it.
As the other garage, 450 means you can have conditional pass (the maximum that garage charges you), and again, do not let them do it.
You can call another garage, Ming Auto.
55 Breezehill Avenue, (613)722-8282
Because the owner, Ming is close to retirement, and his son is in charge of the garage now, the price has become expensive, the father, Ming is more down to earth and nice. I think changing converter at Ming is less than 300 (if Ming is there, not his son, the younger generation, huh!!!)
Unfortunately you dont live in Toronto, my mechanic is in Toronto, and in Toronto, that is the price range for changing CONVERTER.
Maybe you can ask yourself one question, what is your bottom line, which is driving the car for another two years, and if that is the case, condition pass (maximum spending 450) can guarantee that, that is still cheaper than buying a new car, the depreciation after two years is more than 450. If changing a catalytic converter can be part of the 450 conditional pass, then think about it. I hope there are others who have changing converter experience post their experience here.

good luck

Go to the Ottawa Emission Center on Merivale Road between Baseline and Clyde, close to Lowblaws.

I passed by Ming Auto, the father was there. I asked him how to fix emission failure, and he briefly said catalytic converter replacement is one, there is another possibility, electronic failure (I think it directs how much gas mixing before explosion). He said he guarantee 350 a pass, if cannot pass, 250 for conditional pass for one year.

I went to the one at Gladstone, I asked the lady, and she said she has to look at the report before any recommendation.

In the end of the day, if you manage to find a place passing, that is the best.

Good luck

I noticed that you say '250 for conditional pass for one year'. Does that mean any conditional pass can ONLY get one-year stick instead of TWO-year stick?

According to Ontario Ministry of Transportation, conditional pass is for one year, and you cannot sell the car. All certified mechanic can certify that, that is any car fails emission test and have up to 450 CAD of repairs by a certified mechanics. The mechanic can issue you a conditional pass.
Ming Auto owner mentioned the following (if you ask him, he will repeat the same), he said buy something and run the whole tank, then fill half tank of PREMIUM gas, and run. Car must be warm before testing.
I quickly do some mathematics.
If burning one tank of gas (Maxima means 55 litres) and then half tank of PREMIUM, just the cost of burning gas is more than 80 CAD, plus that bottle of additives, the cost is close to 100 CAD. What if the car fails again?
Maybe, you can ask MING Auto, what is/are included in the 350 CAD fix package, I think changing converter is the first he will do , common sense I think, that is around 250. If you pass, charge you 350 and don't need to do anything, the additional 100 is free to him and just that to 250 and it becomes 350, if it fails, give you conditional, which is 250.
As for that place which asks for 450, ridiculous, the owner just maximizes the profit and any certified mechanic can give you conditional pass.
I suggest if your spark PLUG has 40000 km on it, change it, use one tank of premium gas (I suggest Petro 91), and driving on highway with good quality gas (NOT CT gas) helps cleaning up engine.
The best, to you is pass and drive for two years.
If spending 250 with a conditional pass for one year, that is also not a bad option, you don't need to buy a new car, and MAXIMA is a very nice car.
I have a coworker his Honda Civic is over 18 years old and it still running fine.

Good luck, and hope the test centre another person mentioned is better.
