:blowzy::rolleyes:

Class G1 Licence Holder - Drive At Unlawful Hour
Contrary to Highway Act Regulation 340/94

(1) The holder of a Class G1 driver’s licence may drive a Class G1 motor vehicle on a highway if a holder of a Class A, B, C, D, E, F or G driver’s licence or its equivalent authorizing the holder to drive the motor vehicle, who qualifies as an accompanying driver, occupies the seat beside the driver for the purpose of giving him or her instruction in driving the motor vehicle and the following additional conditions are met:

6. The motor vehicle may not be driven by the novice driver between midnight and 5 a.m. O. Reg. 340/94, s. 5 (1); O. Reg. 205/10, s. 2 (1).

Can a G2 new driver drive on the highway? Or does he need to have a G (graduated) driver's licence?

You can drive anywhere with a G2, including the 400 series highways, but you have restrictions on your blood alcohol level and the number of your passengers, you can read more below about G2 and G1 licensing restrictions.

Ontario, Canada has a graduated licensing system. This graduated licensing process lets new drivers get driving experience and skills gradually. The two-step licensing process takes at least 20 months to complete.

With a G1 license there are certain restrictions placed on the driver. One such restriction is that the driver must refrain from driving on Ontario's "400-series" highways or on high speed expressways such as the Queen Elizabeth Way, Don Valley Parkway, Gardiner Expressway, E.C. Row Expressway and the Conestoga Parkway.

When the new driver has completed the G1 road test and progressed in their driving skills so that they can obtain their G2 license there are less restrictions placed on the driver. While there are still some restrictions in place at this level, the driver has more privileges because of their driving experience. Now as a G2 driver you may drive without an accompanying driver on all Ontario roads anytime.

For more information on the restrictions of a G2 license contact the Ministry of Transportation. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/

Graduated Licensing for Automobile Drivers

Class G1

New drivers of passenger vehicles learn to drive with six important conditions with a G1 licence. A new driver must hold a G1 licence for a minimum of 12 months before attempting the G1 road test. This time can be reduced to eight months if you successfully complete a Ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education Course . Drivers earn more privileges after passing their G1 road test.
As a G1 driver, you are required to:
  • maintain a zero blood alcohol level while driving;
  • be accompanied by a fully licensed driver, who has at least four years driving experience, and a blood alcohol level of less than .05 (accompanying drivers 21 and under must have zero per cent), in case he/she needs to take over the wheel;
  • ensure the accompanying driver is the only other person in the front seat;
  • ensure the number of passengers in the vehicle is limited to the number of working seat belts;
  • refrain from driving on Ontario's "400-series" highways or on high speed expressways such as the Queen Elizabeth Way, Don Valley Parkway, Gardiner Expressway, E.C. Row Expressway and the Conestoga Parkway;
  • refrain from driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
Note: If your accompanying driver is a driving instructor licensed in Ontario, you may drive on any road.

(He managed to slip the belt on before the policeman to his car window, and he congratulated himself on successfully avoiding a ticket).
