Unused RRSP contributions:
This is the amount of RRSP contributions that you could not deduct or have chosen not to deduct for any year. This amount is carried forward to the following year and you can use it as a deduction up to your RRSP deduction limit for that year.
1) If you are sure you only contributed the amount of RRSP within your limit in 2009 but you have some unused RRSP contributions available to deduct for 2010, the reason might due to:
- in 2009, you didn't need use all your RRSP contributions to get your full tax refund either because you didn't have sufficient income in 2009 or you have other deductions (i.e. childcare expenses, etc) that have already maximized your tax refund.
- Either the tax software you used or your accountant chose not to deduct full RRSP contribution in 2009 to maximize your refund.
2) please note if, however, you over contributed your RRSP in 2009, you may have to pay a 1% per-month tax on the part of your unused contributions that are "Excess contributions". "RRSP excess contributions" is the amount of your RRSP contributions that is more than your RRSP deduction limit for the year plus $2,000.
Hope this helps
