Gaddafi is a madman. You never know what he will do when he overwhelms the opposition. On the other hand, nobody knows what the opposition will do if they have an overwhelming victory on their own neither. I saw some gruesome videos featuring the Islamic-style execution of pro-Gaddafi millitary personnel too. This is a tricky business to handle for the international community.

A ceasefire based on a delicate balance of power between the two sides might be the best solution for the time being.

the foreign affairs minister of Libya declared immediate ceasefire right after UN adapted the no-fly zone resolution. Well, Gaddafi would better keep his words on this matter. The international community does not need to put boots on the ground to stop him. They can simply neutralize all his tanks and artillery powers from the air and the opposition would do the rest. The opposition had already shown their will and ability in this regard. The big question is, however, nobody is really certain at this point the opposition is any better than Gaddafi.

I think the most likely scenario in short term is a divided Libya with Benghazi being a nation among the nation. The rest of Libya will come over if the opposition develops something really attractive to Libyans in the Benghazi region with the protection and guidance of the west countries. that is of course a long term and idealized picture.

I heard the opposition seized quite a few weapon depots in their revolts. Keep in mind they captured the majority of Libya before the wave turned against them in the last week.
