POS over Internet or over phone, which is better?

I am searching for POS (Point of Sales) system.

I heard there are two kinds of POS from the nature of hardware connection.

-One is POS over generic analog telephone line, which is very popular.

-The other one is POS over internet, whenever there is internet connection, POS transaction can run over internet.

POS over phone is quite popular,

For POS over internet, is there any minimum internet connection requirements? Like minimum 200k bps? or do I have to register high speed internet? Any store owner or business had experience about POS over internet? Is this new technology cost effective, stable and reliable?
