The abandoned Canadian Tire store on Tenth Line Road is seeing some revitalization, with a GoodLife Fitness Club slated to open there in the coming months.
Set to open in the new year, the city’s fourth 24-hour GoodLife co-ed fitness centre will employ 75 people and be the 17th location to open in Ottawa, according to Krista Maling, senior public relations manager with GoodLife Fitness.
The club, located at 1777 Tenth Line Road, will measure 25,000-sq.-ft., which is comparable to the Place d’Orléans facility. It was not immediately clear how large the old Canadian Tire store was, nor what will happen if there’s any unused space.
Opening a new gym during an economic downturn that has seen many businesses downsize might seem odd, but it’s about filling a need in the Ottawa market, GoodLife divisional manager Craig Saikaly indicated. “In Ottawa alone there must be close to a million people if you count all the outlying areas,” he said. “Even if you take every fitness club and every chain of clubs in Ottawa – from GoodLife to the YMCA and everyone in between – we haven’t even scratched the surface with the amount of people that are actually working out at any given facility.”
Locally, there was a demand for another fitness centre. Members at the two existing Orléans facilities – the Place d’Orléans location and Innes Road Loblaws gym – requested another venue, Saikaly continued. “There’s a lot of people in Orléans and one of the biggest reasons why people will not join a fitness club is convenience to where they live,” said Saikaly, who has been a divisional manager for 10 of his 12 years with GoodLife Fitness. “We wanted to listen, we wanted to put in another club.”
Orléans, he noted, has grown in leaps and bounds. Saikaly, who spent about 18 years growing up in the east end and whose parents still reside in the area, said he remembers driving to Tenth Line area during his high school days to find fields and brush. “It’s just exploded,” he said, adding he moved to the west end when he was 26. “Over the past 12 years I just can’t believe how big Orléans has become.”
As for opening a 24-hour club, Saikaly noted a lot of people work shifts and prefer to exercise after work. With the Place d’Orléans location already open around the clock, the Tenth Line Road facility will be the second 24-hour operation in Orléans. The west end and the south end of the city, meanwhile, each have one 24-hour GoodLife.
The newest addition to the GoodLife chain in Ottawa will boast state-of-the-art cardio equipment, free weights and strength training equipment, a group cycling studio, group Exercise studio and a cardio theatre equipped with plasma televisions. The facility will also offer tanning, personal training, child care, dry cedar saunas and a lounge with massage chairs.
