The terms "designated driver" and "designated driving" refer to selecting a person to remain sober, as the driver of a vehicle, while others are allowed to drink to excess (with alcoholic beverages). A designated driver is a person who abstains from alcohol on a social occasion in order to drive his/her companions home safely. It is intended as a safe alternative to driving under the influence. In order to encourage these arrangements, some bar, restaurant and nightclub proprietors will offer free non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers.[1]

Been a volunteer designated driver once during X'mas eve long time ago. Somehow my son and I were left twiddling our thumbs for 3 hours and no one needed my service. The idea was two of us would drive to the bar and pick up our client. One would drive his car home.
Oh I remember now. It was called Operation Red Nose.

Would be interesting to talk to you gals, zhangmiao and darkchild, over a drink. Zhangmiao seems a lively character and darkchild is intriguing. But then I am an old fart who needs his beauty sleep by 10pm. Not quite used to bar scene.
