My tenant asked me 2 months ago to cut a tree in front of the townhouse as he said the birds have "poop" on his car. He asked me to get city permission to cut the tree just ensure not to damage the car when cutting down the tree. I didn't want to cut the tree actually. Today I am surprised to find the tree has been cut down already. Apparently he cut the tree without city permission and notifying me. What should I do next? Will I get fine from city? The tenant has been living in the townhouse for 4 years and always pays rent on time without problem. Only this thing bothers me a lot. Anyone can give me any advice? Very appreciated.

First, not all the trees need permit - only bigger ones required for residential dwelling, like your townhouse; you can check Ottawa City's web for details.
Second, even if yours needs a permit, but if nobody reported to the city, then you are fine.
Third, even if someone reported to the city, you are not the one who cut the tree.

So don't worry too much, but it is weird that the tenant cut the tree without informing you. But if I were you, I may be happy if the tree causes danger to the house, like too close to the fundation, too big, or a dying tree, since you need to pay hundreds dollars to cut it down.

Anyway, take it easy.

Look at the big picture. Ignore the trivial stuff. Otherwise you won't be happy in life.

Getting along well with your tenant (especially an otherwise great long-term tenant) is more important than the tree. You don't live there anyways. Why missing a tree would bother you? Does that tree add value to that house?
