Canadian Landed Immigrants from Commonwealth Countries Require Visas and Passports to Enter United States
Effective March 17, 2003, landed immigrants of Canada from British Commonwealth countries, landed immigrants of Bermuda from British Commonwealth countries, British subjects in Bermuda, and nationals of Ireland and British Commonwealth countries residing in Canada will need a visa and passport to enter the United States.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Department of State each published rules amending the regulation that previously allowed the above listed groups to enter the U.S. without a passport or visa stamp.
Persons affected by the new rule who will be entering the US on or after March 17, 2003, may obtain a visa stamp in their passport by applying at a U.S. Consulate abroad. An appointment may be made at a US Consulate in Canada through the National Visa Appointment Reservation System www.nvars.com
Prior to March 17, 2003, Canadian landed immigrants from British Commonwealth countries may still be admitted to the U.S. without a visa. On and after March 17, 2003, they will be required to carry a U.S. visa stamp and a valid passport from their home country in order to be admitted into the U.S.
The new rule does not affect persons eligible to enter the US on the Visa Waiver program. Landed immigrants of Canada of Bermuda who are subjects of British Commonwealth countries may enter the US for up to 90 days for appropriate business or visitor purposes on the Visa Waiver program if their country has been designated to participate in the program.

At a minimum, carry photo identification (driver's licence) and your birth certificate or citizenship card, and have them ready for presentation at primary inspection. It is recommended that Canadian citizen drivers obtain and carry a valid passport.
