Can a Roasted Seed Sprout and Bloom with
Flowers?

A long time ago, when I used to go to Sunday school, my
teacher told me this story: A king of a certain country gathered
all of his subjects and spoke to them.

“My loving people, today I will give each one of you a
flower seed of the heart. This is a flower seed that sprouts
and blooms beautiful flowers if they are planted and raised
by kind people. But if they are planted and raised by people
who are evil, it will sprout, but flowers will not bloom from
them. If the people who plant the seed are even more evil,
then it won’t even sprout. So if you plant this seed and bring
back beautiful flowers, I will look at them and reward the
one who has brought back the best flowers.

That day, the king passed out the flower seeds to every
person in the country. From that day on, his subjects got out
their flowerpots and filled them with soft soil. After planting
the seeds, they added fertilizer, watered them, and poured
all their hearts into making the flowers bloom. Whenever
the people gathered together, they would constantly speak
about the flower seeds.

“Mr. Kim. How many sprouts do you have?”
“We have two buds.”

“Really? We have three.”
People planted the flower seeds and flowers bloomed. A
certain family said that a flower had bloomed. Another family
said that two flowers had bloomed. Yet another family
said that three flowers had bloomed. People were boasting
that their flowers had bloomed. About the time that the
f lowers should be in full bloom, the king announced, “I
shall examine your flowers tomorrow. I shall walk along the
roadside; so everyone, bring out the flowerpots you have
planted your flowers in.”

The next day arrived and the time had come. The king
came walking along the roadside. The people were all lined
up along the roadside. They had all brought out such beautiful
flowers. They looked at one another’s flowers and said,
“That guy’s flowers are prettier than mine. Will he receive the
reward or will I?” However, the king would not look at the
flowers but just passed them by. After the king had walked
for a long while, he stopped at a certain spot. There stood a
boy named Tom, who didn’t even have a flowerpot. He only
had an earthen vessel filled with dirt. He was crying and
sobbing in front of the vessel. The king asked him, “Child,
why are you crying?”
“Your Highness, I’m worthy of death! Because my heart is

so evil, the flower didn’t even sprout.”
As Tom said this, he cried and cried.
“So, how did you plant the seed that a flower didn’t even
sprout?”
“Well, I watered the seed and I took care of it with all of
my heart, but no sprout came from this seed. I know this is
because my heart is so evil. Please give me my punishment.”
The king smiled and took Tom’s hand and said, “Follow
me.” So Tom took his cracked earthen vessel that was filled
with dirt and followed the king. The king stood high above
all the people and began to speak, “My loving people.”
Everyone became quiet.

“I wanted to know your hearts, so the flower seeds that
I had given you had secretly been roasted all night long in
a cauldron. So how is it that flowers have come from those
roasted seeds?” Because the seeds the king had given the
people would not sprout, the people were afraid of being
labeled as evil, so they planted different flower seeds and
raised flowers. Only Tom had brought a vessel of dirt without
a sprout. So who was the good person? Tom was the
good person. I didn’t know why my Sunday school teacher
told us this story, but that story remains vivid in my memory
