Mr. Chan is an excellent sports ambassador for Canada and right now the best figure skater on the face of the planet, (all 7 billion of us). It comes from his training by Don Jackson and further training by Ozborne Colson, (hope I spelled his name correctly).
These were skating legends for Canada. Mr. Jackson won the award before and you can still see his gold medal skate on You Tube, I believe.
It's a continuation of a great tradition.
I have had the honour of speaking with Patrick Chan briefly and he is an intelligent, articulate, and extremely talented young man. He has just won another Gold Medal for Canada and we should all be thanking him for making us look so good when others are making us look so bad.
Congratulations Patrick. You've dedicated yourself to the sport/art and you've made it to the top. Well done!

Patrick Chan has been training and competing during the years of great support for figure skating over the past decade and now the support has declined. That is obvious by the reduced hours of TV coverage of all competitions including the Canadian National competition this year. We need to increase our support.
As Patrick stated, and I think correctly, hockey overshadows every other sport in Canada. While others may slam my comment, it may be that it's all about cash flow. Hockey is a money maker for big corporations, while other sports not so much.
Figure skating is a major cost for parents if they do fund a child through levels of figure skating in Canada. There is no financial assistance for a young skater until they are a national or international winner.
The huge cost to Patrick's parents is a very valid comment, that in Canada there is no assistance available, whereas in his homeland, there would have been more financial support for his training. Fact is fact.
Perhaps the backlash of criticizing Patrick's comments is more about a realization that our figure skaters and their parents indeed sacrifice many years of their lives with the financial expectations for thousands of hours of training.
Let's congratulate our Canadian Patrick Chan for this honour. I am sure his parents are also delighted with such recognition. We also need to wish Patrick much success in his future as he continues to skate for Canada.
