Introduction
A very interesting region to drive around, yet big, spectacular waterfalls are rare. The Hog's Back and Rideau Falls in Ottawa are first rate, but other waterfalls are small, and widely scattered. Most are ignored, and thus you can usually get them to yourself.
Some falls are formed on sedimentary rocks, while more are formed on the harder igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Canadian Shield. The topography of much of the region is relatively flat, and the lack of a major escarpment has prevented the development of too many large falls.
This region is furthest from the cities that I have lived in, and as a result, there are very few with a detailed page. The region holds good potential though, and I've found a number of sites on topographic maps that I look forward to visiting. The gems are probably hidden from the beaten path: got to get that canoe!
Major cities and towns include Ottawa, Perth and Cornwall. The majority of waterfalls are found in Lanark and Renfrew counties.
