Thanks for the Memories
Nearly 20 Myrtle Beach golf courses have closed since the peak years in the late 1990s, when there were more than 115. Most deserved their fates, argues Donald Wizeman, president of the Myrtle Beach Golf Association, whose website (mbga.com) mixes travel tips with occasionally withering criticism of the local powers-that-be. Here are the five clubs he was sorriest to see go:
1. "Angels Trace (1995-2006) had two great golf courses, North and South, with friendly people. It was a victim of the economy."
2. "Belle Terre (1995-2005) was a fine property. It drained better than most and they had an executive course."
3. "Marsh Harbour (1980-2002) was excellent -- a phenomenal golf course designed by Dan Maples."
4. "Ocean Harbour (1989-2001) was a solid B or B+. It was not quite to the level of Marsh Harbour but still good."
5. "Wild Wing Avocet (1993-2006) was one of the top five courses in Myrtle Beach. Its closing was a big blow to golf here."
