About 500 municipal politicians and green-business types are expected to spend several days in Ottawa in February at a conference hosted by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The “Sustainable Communities” conference is meant to help civic leaders exchange ideas about how to make their cities more environmentally friendly while saving money at the same time — and to give green-technology entrepreneurs a chance to sell to them. The program includes tours of Ottawa’s sewage-treatment plant, the Beaver Barracks non-profit housing development across from the Museum of Nature (which has been built to incorporate environmental measures such as green roofs and geothermal heating), and the Great Canadian Theatre Company’s new building in Hintonburg (which includes a theatre and a housing component, built to top environmental standards). The conference runs from Feb. 8 to 10 at the Westin hotel.
