Ottawa woman fined more than $23,000 for undeclared jewelry

OTTAWA — An Ottawa woman has been fined more than $23,000 for failing to declare a watch and other jewelry when returning to Canada in 2010. Meredithe Rechan, 48, pleaded guilty in December to failing to declare goods under Section 12 of the Customs Act and was fined the amount she would have paid had she properly declared the items, the Canadian Border Services Agency said in a news release.
