More cash-strapped owners turning pets over to Ottawa Humane Society

Hard economic times means cutting excess spending ­— and for a growing number of Ottawans, that means getting rid of the family pet. Citizens are surrendering pets to the pound in record numbers this year. The Ontario Humane Society said that over the last 12 months, there’s been an increase of more than 20 per cent in animals being brought into the shelter. The reason? Owners could not afford necessary medical treatment to care for their four-legged buddy.
