Councillor says over-sized Preston Street pub patio should be allowed

OTTAWA — A Preston Street pub should be allowed to continue setting up a long-standing summer patio that takes up too much sidewalk space under a municipal bylaw, the area’s councillor says, but city staff are opposed to the idea. About 12 years ago, the owner of Pub Italia partnered with the city on a pilot project for a patio in an area where the sidewalk “bulbs out” at Preston and Pamilla streets. The owner paid half of the costs for the bulb-out to be built on the city’s right-of-way, says a report from Somerset Councillor Diane Holmes to council’s transportation committee.
