Importance of Food and Agriculture
in Canada-China Relations
Speaker: Fred Gorrell, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada

Room 156, Library and Archives Building, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa
Refreshments following the presentation and Q&A
Everyone is welcome.*
When feeding a population greater than 1.3 billion persons, food security is a key consideration. This combined with increasing economic prosperity and a growing middle class demanding greater variety and quality of products, means China will become more dependent on imported products to meet its domestic demand. With a population of 34 million persons and the fourth largest agricultural exporting nation in the world, Canada is well situated to assist and benefit from China’s growing demand. The complementary nature of our agricultural and agri-food sectors is a vital component of Canada-China relations and one that will provide greater economic opportunity and benefit for Canadians. Or will it?
Mr. Gorrell has been to China many times. The last time, he accompanied Minister Ritz on the Prime Minister’s delegation to China in February. In June 2009, he was appointed Director General to lead and develop the newly-formed Market Access Secretariat at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Before that, he was Executive Director, International Policy at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. From 2004-2007 he served as Agriculture Counsellor at the Canadian Embassy in Washington with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. From 1999-2003, he worked on agriculture trade policy and bilateral negotiations with a focus on the United States and China. In addition to the above, Mr. Gorrell held a number of operational positions throughout his career, responsible for the licensing and arbitration of produce disputes between Canada and the United States, as well as a primary products inspector for process fruit and vegetable and meat establishments.
A native of the province of Ontario, Mr. Gorrell has Bachelor of Science degrees in Agriculture and Physical Geography from the University of Guelph and Queen's University.
