Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick presented Equity and Diversity Awards to the 2011 winners at today’s City Council meeting.
The fifth edition of this annual award recognized individual City employees and teams who demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering a positive and respectful work environment and to providing services that respects the diversity of the residents of the City of Ottawa.
“By working together we are strengthening our community and making it responsive to the diverse needs of our residents,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Through equity and inclusion programs, we are helping to ensure that everyone can benefit from the social, economic and cultural life of our city.”
This year’s individual Equity and Diversity Award was shared between two deserving recipients in the Transit Services Department. Kathy Riley played an instrumental role in the development of OC Transpo’s Co-operative Seating Campaign, the Travel Training Program and the Community Bus Pass Program while Peter Paquette displayed leadership in developing an exceptional training program entitled “Learning My Way”.
The team Equity and Diversity Award went to the Cultural Plan Renewal Team comprised of Cathy Shepertycki, Catherine Caron, Jim Mountain, Kwende Kefentse, Natali Zuniga, Nicole Zuger and Debbie Hill. This team ensured that all diverse people and communities had an opportunity to give their input on their visions for the future of Ottawa’s arts, culture and heritage scene. They were nominated for incorporating the equity and inclusion principles with its cultural service partners in the community throughout the City’s Cultural Plan Renewal process.
“I want to thank all the 2011 winners and nominees for their passion and dedication to making equity and diversity a priority in the workplace,” said City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick. “They have forged partnerships and found innovative solutions to assist us in realizing our vision of a City for everyone.”
The City of Ottawa is committed to providing quality services to the diverse population it serves. Winners and nominees of the Equity and Diversity Awards reflect this commitment in their daily work by applying the Equity and Inclusion Lens, a tool for staff to use in policy, program development and client service. The winners and nominees also help to make the City of Ottawa an inclusive workforce in all five designated groups: women; persons with disabilities; Aboriginal peoples; members of visible minorities, and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans individuals.
