OTTAWA — City council and members of Ottawa’s biggest transit union put a stamp on four years of labour peace at OC Transpo Wednesday, with both sides formally approving a new contract for about 2,500 workers. The agreement between the city and the union gives members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279 a cumulative raise of about 8.8 per cent over four years. It also improves benefits and promises to return OC Transpo mechanics to a bus garage near Merivale Road they had quit in the interest of efficiency. The union members approved it with an 85.3-per-cent vote in favour, announced first thing Wednesday morning, and then city council voted for it unanimously in the early afternoon.
