Invitation to a presentation:
China's Three Gorges Dam:
Development and Conflicts
by
Dr. Wang Qiming, Science Counselor
Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada
Tuesday June 12, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.
Library and Archives Canada, Room 156
395 Wellington Street, Ottawa
Refreshments and conversation following the presentation
Everyone is welcome.*
Since its inception the Three Gorges Dam has inspired both admiration for the marvels of its engineering and hydroelectric power generation; and, controversy for its local environmental and social impacts. The Three Gorges dam is also a key piece of China’s water management strategy, which includes flood control and major diversions of water from the relative abundance of the southern water basins to the drier lands of the north.
Dr. Wang’s presentation will address all of these topics.
Dr. Wang brings considerable experience to this topic. He has degrees from Peking University and Australian National University in Canberra in geochemistry and mineralogy, and did post doctorate studies at Stanford University.
Dr. Wang worked in the Research Centre for Environmental Sciences, Peking University before joining the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). In the MOST, Wang worked in the National Office of China’s Agenda 21 — the organization dealing with national sustainable development strategies and climate change issues. Prior to his assignment as Science Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Canada, Dr. Wang was in the Chinese Embassy in the UK and in New Delhi, India.
*Free for CCFS members. There is a charge of $5 for non-CCFS members. The CCFS-O annual membership is $20 for individuals, $30 for a family, $12 for a student and $17 for
a student family. For further information, please call 613-729-3660 or go to www.fccfa.ca/Ottawa. Membership forms are available at this website and at meetings.
