What is your definition of GREAT car?!
It is easy to jump to the conclusion, or say something "I don't like it", or "It is bad", without anything to justify the comment.

If you read Consumer Reports (Not Consumer Disgest!!) April Edition, you know ranking of Subaru.

When comparing cars, we have to compare apple with apple, not apple with orange. You cannot compare Subaru with Audi or Mercedes Benz. You have to compare it with cars like Malibu (same prize range), reliability, prize, features, etc.
