ALMONTE — James Naismith doesn’t quite play basketball, but if you throw a ball at him, he’ll jump. And maybe even moo. James Naismith is Stephen Overbury’s pet bull, named after the famed Canadian founder of basketball. Almonte basketball fanatic Overbury plans to open what he calls “Canada’s Tiniest Museum” Aug. 11-12 at the Mississippi Mills Old Town Hall featuring his extensive collection of Naismith’s personal items, including letters, diaries, manuscripts and rare photographs. Basketball, Overbury said, is woven into the history of the British Empire and was part of growing up as a Scottish settler in rural Canada. Almonte is Naismith’s hometown where James Naismith, the bull, lives two minutes from where the sports legend’s house once stood.
